Thursday, september 5 at 7:00 PM, Filmtheater De Witt restarts the monthly screening for non-Dutch speaking audiences. We screen either an English spoken movie or one with English subtitles. With a brief introduction about the movie, its making and other fun facts by cinema-owner Geert ter Steeg.
This time the selected movie is Widow Cliquot, a biopic about La Grande Dame de la Champagne.
At 20, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (Haley Bennett) marries François Clicquot. The year is 1797. He runs the then-growing company that produces champagne. When François dies just a few years later, she takes over the vine as his widow (“veuve”). She is determined to develop her husband’s revolutionary applications. Plagued by the seasons and hindered by competing winemakers as well as the Code Napoleon, which prohibits women from running a business, the elegant widow must pull out all the stops to continue the Clicquot business. Her name grows into the famous brand.
